** spoiler alert ** To describe Come Away With Me in one word is to say it is a tragedy. From the moment the brown pills were introduced I feared there was one possible ending, yet I read every page hoping, begging it would change. The tragedy lies in the faults of our judicial system, the loss of a beautiful love story, the loss of innocence, and the prejudice that walks the streets of “the greatest” country every day. Reading this book I was reminded of a lesson John Steinbeck tried to teach me in 8th grade through Of Mice and Men which is, if you truly understand someone there isn’t room for hate, only love. No one in this book is perfect, and much like my feelings about Curly, I’m not sure there will ever be love in my heart for someone like a particular gastroenterologist. However, I saw that there is no one in this book who was dealt a great deck of cards in the game of life. Whether its a strong no-bullshit judge who lost her daughter, a woman who seems uptight and spoiled losing her job, a beautiful woman who was dehumanized by the men in her life because of the face she was given, or the boy who lost his family and wore his trauma on his face for everyone to see. What was created was a story I was invested in. Having a hunch on the ending did not stop me from turning every page hoping it would be different. The world is not full of sunshine, rainbows, kittens, and happy endings. There is loss, pain, love, and all of it is out of our control. This is the type of book that hurts so good, and makes you want to get up and change the world. Not to fulfill one’s own selfish needs of being a do-gooder, but because it shows you life is not fair and that truly sucks. Despite my heart sitting in the floor next to me torn up in a million pieces, this book gives me hope and forces me to believe in second chances and kindness. A beautiful, tragic story and a great read.
